System Design

Any solar energy system without grid connectivity needs to be designed on a project-by-project basis depending on the customer load and environmental characteristics of the site location.

Different applications also have different risk tolerances for power outages. For instance, a village in a rural area with a solar powered water pump may find 10% down time (due to severe weather conditions) acceptable. However, military telecommunications sites have very little tolerance for down time. Many military power applications are required to be 99.999% reliable. The greater the need for reliability, the more advanced the engineering of the system becomes.

Site Evaluations

As a prerequisite to most site designs, ISC recommends completion of a Solar Site Evaluation. In this assessment, we measure solar irradiance and shading as well as conduct an environmental assessment of the proposed location of the off grid energy system. This assessment avoids later unforeseen costs by identifying obstacles before the design and construction phase of any project.

Remote Monitoring

Monitoring of off-grid solar and hybrid power sites is essential to maintaining optimal system performance. Constant monitoring removes a great deal of system failure risk by identifying critical problems before a failure occurs. Field service engineers can be quickly deployed to sites in the event of a critical alarm or can work with you to troubleshoot many problems remotely. Potential problems with the system can likely be addressed and rectified without loss of load.

ISC offers complete custom monitoring solutions that record actual field performance analysis of your sites. Our experts can determine:

  • Vital system operation characteristics that require monitoring
  • Best methods to monitor your systems vital characteristics
  • The levels at which alarms should be triggered.

In the event of an alarm, ISC or your preferred point person can be notified by SMS message, e-mail, or mobile phone in order to deploy the necessary field service technicians to the site. Our technicians can arrive on site, equipped with the appropriate tools and replacement parts (in most cases) to minimize potential down time of the site in the event of a critical alarm. Our technicians will work closely with you and provide onsite training to help educate your personnel on overall system operation and troubleshooting in the event of an alarm. Our field service technicians can also inspect your site at the end of any service call to ensure it is performing optimally. As part of the monitoring package, ISC will then provide documentation including:
